Garden Security

Now the warmer weather looks like arriving in time for Easter, the birds are starting the make their nests and the first flowers of spring are bursting forth. This is the time of year when we all think about getting out and doing some work in the garden. Unfortunately, this also means the criminal element amongst us will start to look at the garden implements they might need, mowers, spades, forks, hedge trimmers, rotary machines except they won't buy them, they'll steal them from you and me. Now is the time to give thought to your shed security. Perhaps mark your valuable items with your postcode and house number, mark them with ultaviolet pen or even consider 'Smartwater' - the latter available at Southam Police Station for just £15 - contains enough to do ALL your household valuables and tools too! How about a shed alarm - about £10 from most hardware stores.
Remember your shed is as only as secure as the lock you use or the screws you use to fasten the bolt / hasp. Put a piece of metal on the inside where the screws go or consider using bolts instead.

Horsewatch Scheme

A national Horsewatch scheme has been set up by Hampshire Police. If you would like to receive Horsewatch bulletins, go onto www.nfed.co.uk/horsewatch and sign up as members.

Domestic Abuse

We are working together as Warwickshire Against Domestic Abuse with over 30 other public services and voluntary organisations to tackle the harm caused by domestic abuse. If you or someone you know is affected by emotional, financial, physical or other forms of abuse in Warwickshire Freephone 0800 408 1552 or visit www.talk2someone.org.uk. In an emergency call 999.

Please note: Calls from most landlines to the Warwickshire Domestic Abuse Freephone number 0800 408 1552 are free and not itemised on bills. If in doubt, or you are calling from a mobile, please check with your telephone provider.

Nuisance Youths

The problem of nuisance youths has been identified by residents involved with the PACT process and has been adopted by Southam Police as one of their three priorities and is currently the main focus. The Police working very closely with Southam Town Council and all the local Parish Councils have created an Operational Order to combat this problem positively, robustly and collectively.

The intention of the police is to:

  • Target and tackle issues which matter most ot the community in Southam
  • Increase visibility and familiarity to reassure members of the public that anti-social behaviour will not be tolerated and therefore improve confidence and feelings of safety within the community.

To date the Operation has given many positive results. This in turn has sent out a very loud and clear message across our communities confirming that such behaviour will not be tolerated. Numerous stop searches have been completed, arrests have been carried out, alcohol has been confiscated, youths taken home and street cautions administered for various offences. The majority of local youths are law abiding, well behaved and respectful individuals. However, the minority who are coming to the police attention are being dealt with positively. All parents must be mindful and aware of where their children are, who they associate with and what they actually do with their spare time. We must remember that crime and anti-social behaviour cannot flourish in a community that cares.
