Avon Dassett Open Gardens

This year's Open Gardens took place on Sunday 7th July. The weather was warm and sunny and visitor numbers were up on last year - 335 compared to 240 last year.
We raised £3,033.53 for the National Gardens Scheme and £212.65 for Avon Dassett Parish Council to be used on the upkeep of the flower tubs in the village. Thank you to everyone who came along or supported the event by donating cakes or helping on the day.

Dulcimer Concert

On Friday 27th September the well-known Dulcimer player Damian Clarke will perform in Fenny Compton Parish Church. The doors will open at 7pm for a concert starting at 7:30pm. Tickets will cost £10 and include a glass of wine. They are available in advance from Lesley Bosman 770 976 or Cherie Southgate 770 101 or at the door. All proceeds will be for the Church Fabric Fund.
During the afternoon of the 27th there will an exhibition of Damian's artwork between 2pm and 5 pm at the Church where you are invited to call in at any time.

Lead Theft

Just as we were going to press, news came through that thieves had stolen led from the church roof in Fenny Compton. The severe rain the following morning threatened the interior of the church but the roof was quickly covered.
Fenny Compton is not the only church in the area to have suffered this despicable act. Many in this district and in South Northamptonshire have suffered equally.
Insurance will cover some of the expense of replacement but probably not all of the costs. Insurers of churches are finding theft of lead an increasing problem and premiums will, no doubt, be rising further.

Rural Cinema

This month's film at Fenny Compton Village Hall will be Mary Queen of Scots on Saturday 14th September at 7:30pm, doors open at 7pm. Please email cinema@fcvh.org.uk or text 07850 630 401 if you would like to reserve seats. The normal ticket price is still just £3.

Fenny In Flower

Wowza! Thank you, Fenny Compton,! Your generosity raised a tickle over £4,500! The money has been split between the Church and the Village Hall, the Hall already having used some of it for repairs.
2021 will see the return of the Front Garden trail- we would really like to include you if you did not participate this year. The children's Bee Trail was very enjoyable, and plans are percolating for an Insect Trail of some sort for next time. If you have any expertise in this area, please do get in touch. Email Cherie Southgate cheriesls@me.com and put FIF2021 in the subject bar. If you would prefer to go old school and write, please drop a note in at Blacksmiths Cottage on the High Street. Fenny Compton Methodist Church

Coffee Mornings: Coffee Mornings are held each Friday 10:15am-12noon with lots of fun upstairs for Mums and Toddlers. We would be pleased to see you at our Church services or Coffee Mornings - there is always a great welcome at the Chapel.

Service : Weekly on Sundays at 10:30am

News from Fenny Compton Chapel. Our services continue as usual each Sunday at 10:30am and on the third Sunday the Anglicans mostly join us. On 9th June, we as a congregation were able to participate in the service celebrating Pentecost at St. Peter & St. Clare with coffee and cakes after. This was a thank-you to Fenny Methodists for hosting Anglican services throughout the winter
We as a Circuit will be welcoming Stratford-on-Avon, Bidford, Welford, Evesham, and Henley-in-Arden Churches in September and, to encourage fellowship, our Minister Reverend Peter Powers has arranged inter Church walks during June and July. Keith Hicks led a walk on 9th June with a short service at Fenny Compton. About eighteen people walked through fields to Knightcote Chapel, where we were welcomed with tea and cakes by steward Tony Charles.
Coffee mornings continue every Friday morning, please join us for this or worship on a Sunday.

Dassett Country Show

The Dassett Country Show was held on Saturday 3rd August. We were very lucky with the weather and had a busy day. At the time of writing, the final figures are still being pulled together but we expect to have raised over £4,000- for our nominated charities which are The Pam Britton Trust for Dementia & Banbury and District Samaritans, and also for local groups and projects.
Thank you to everyone who came along and to those who supported the event by helping on a stall or in the tea tent, by baking cakes, or by helping us with the substantial task of ‘setting up' for and ‘taking down' after the event. Many thanks also to those who donated bottles, raffle, or tombola prizes. We are fortunate that this support comes not only from Avon Dassett, but from the surrounding villages too.
If there is local group or project that you would like to nominate to receive part of the funds we have raised, please provide details to Michele Gill by email at chairman@thedassettcountryshow.co.uk or on 690 987 by Monday 30th September. Donations will be approved at our AGM - date to be advised.

Just a Bite

On Monday 30th September, the annual Harvest Produce Sale will be held alongside the Just a Bite lunch 12noon to 1:30pm in Fenny Compton Village Hall in aid of church funds. A light lunch of homemade soup, roll and cheese costs £3.50, with homemade cake, tea and coffee are also available.

The Village Violin School

Twenty-four violinists/viola players from Village Violin School travelled all the way to The Kingsley School, Leamington on 15th June to compete in the Leamington Spa Competitive Festival classes.

The Beginners, The Improvers and a combined Improvers/Seniors group played in the Under 13 Class and their excellent performances gained many compliments from the adjudicator. The Improvers were awarded The Twentyman Trophy, winning the class for their performance of ‘Pirate Pieces of Ten' played by Natalie, Alice, Emily H, Zoe, Lydia, Una, Marcus, Maisy, Dan and Mila (violas). The Beginners - Marcus, Daisy, Margot, Riley, Lydia, Maisy, Freida, Amy, Georgina and Harry - playing ‘Apples Strictly Twinkling Down' were awarded joint Second Place with the Improvers/Seniors - Laura, Emily, Dan, Anna, Olivia, Natalie, Alice, Charlie, Mila, Lydia, Emily H, Zoe, Una and Marcus, Amy, cello - playing ‘Classic Bits and Pieces'. In the Under 18 Class the Seniors - Dan, Anna, Alice, Laura, Emily R, Mila, Burcin, Charlie, Olivia and Amy, cello - played Pachelbel's Canon. These players excelled themselves and we were delighted by their outstanding performance, as was the whole audience.

Laura, Emily, Anna and Olivia played Telemann's Adagio and Allegro for Four Violins fighting off highly competent opposition in a large class of small groups to win the 13 years and under class and The Simon Richards Award. This was presented by Anita Richards in memory of her son, Simon, who was a keen young violinist who died aged 12 in 2015. We are honoured to be the first recipients of this award and the hard work and gorgeous playing of the quartet made the award a well-deserved one.

The final class of the day was a superb performance of French Folk Song by Alice, Natalie, Mila and Amy, well done for superb sound, counting and ensemble! This was rounded off with a Polka, which included a few thrills and spills, played by Dan, Charlie, Chandima and Amy.
What a wonderful day of truly top quality violin/viola/cello playing to bring the year's performances, practising and learning together nearly to a close. Thank you to everyone involved.

Players from Village Violin School played on Sunday 23rd June in the Village Hall as part of the Fenny Compton Flower Festival and Open Gardens.

Abacus

We hope everyone has had a restful and relaxing summer, but we will soon be back in the swing of things and the children will be busy learning through play. We welcome our new families and hope that they will enjoy being part of us.

We are always looking out for committee members and fundraising ideas so please come and see us if you would like to play a more active role.
We will be holding fundraising events over the coming months, so please look out for further details around the village. We also have a Facebook page which you can look and comment on.

We do have sessions available so if you have a child aged 2½ and have not yet been in touch, please call in or telephone- details in The Directory. We look forward to hearing from you.

Avon Dassett Gardening Club

The next meeting of our club will be another outdoor visit to the lovely garden of Bourton House in Bourton-on -the-Hill GL56 9AE. We will meet there at 2:30pm on Tuesday 17th September. Entrance to the garden is £6 and there is a tearoom for refreshments. This is a stunning garden and well worth a visit, so if you would like to join us there, you will be most welcome.

Over 60s

In July we were entertained by Rob and his music, it was a most enjoyable meeting. After a short break in August we look forward to celebrating our Harvest Festival. Please bring along any produce including fruit and vegetables, cakes, and jams to be auctioned later in the afternoon. Anyone will be made most welcome to join us on Tuesday 10th September at 2:30pm in Fenny Compton Village Hall.

Once again Southam Lions invite all Senior Citizens to their Annual Party which will take place at 2pm on Saturday 21st September at Southam College. As ever they have an excellent programme arranged and there is always time for a chat with old friends. You will be welcomed with a drink on arrival and during the afternoon, tea, sandwiches, and cakes will be served to your table.

Fenny Compton & District WI

With the advent of September, it feels as if Summer is over. However, we have had a very enjoyable couple of months. At our July meeting Trevor Langley entertained us with tales of Warwick and its buildings. Also in July we provided tea, coffee, light lunches and cakes at the Fenny Compton Park Up. This was a very well attended event and we were kept busy, but we all had a good time and were able to contribute a hefty wedge to the worthwhile local charities it supported.

August saw some of us judging at the Dassett Country Show which was another fun filled afternoon. Due to inclement weather our Garden Meeting was held indoors but we kept a picnic style atmosphere.

We will be learning about the Bossa Nova with the help of Neville Cooper at our September meeting so that will keep us on our toes. In October we will be having a short-mat bowls afternoon in Knightcote Village Hall.

Our craft group has started knitting hats , gloves and scarves which will be given to the homeless in the winter months.
Guests are always welcome to any of our meetings, we make a small charge of £5 which includes refreshments and a raffle ticket.

The Compton Chronicle

Georgina Runnicles has moved on to pastures new. We wish her well and thank her for all the work she has done for The Chronicle over many years. We welcome to the team Jason Wise and Michele Gill who will be working on the Diary and Club News.
It would be helpful if articles and news of clubs and societies could be sent in by the 12th of the month. As I am sure you appreciate, it takes some time to pull the magazine together and any delay in sending in copy makes this more difficult. The printer also needs sufficient time to produce the magazine.
February sees both Valentine's Day and the Chinese New Year which will be celebrated in grand style in Birmingham. This year is the Year of the Pig and on the Children's Pages there is an explanation the characteristics and good traits of those born in the Year of the Pig.

The Village Hall

Village Hall Sign: The Village Hall needs to be more visible and the trustees are running a competition for the most innovative and striking design for a new sign at the front of the building. Please consider the practicalities and likely cost of your idea along with the other requirements. Note that this is not an art competition, ideas are wanted that can be implemented to improve the image of the Hall. There will be a small prize and a big "Thank you" for the idea chosen so please get thinking and send in your ideas by Thursday 28th February. You can submit by email to sec@fcvh.org.uk or through the letterbox at the front of the Hall.

Easy Fundraising: Another way to support the Hall is Easyfundraising. This gives the Hall a small payment whenever you shop online at certain retailers. Dassett Men's Club

Our June meeting at The Yew Tree was well attended. The summer social meetings have become a popular addition to our programme. Our next event is a visit to the Triumph Motorcycle Factory on Wednesday 17th July. Meeting at The Merrie Lion for tea/coffee at 10:30am. Leave for the factory at 11am. The tour is at 12:30pm and will cost £18. If you would like to join the tour, please contact Mike Forbes 690 900 in advance as the tour is pre-booked.
