Lead Theft

Just as we were gong to press, news came through that thieves had stolen led from the church roof in Fenny Compton. The severe rain the following morning threatened the interior of the church but the roof was quickly covered.
Fenny Compton is not the only church in the area to have suffered this despicable act. Many in this district and in South Northamptonshire have suffered equally.
Insurance will cover some of the expense of replacement but probably not all of the costs. Insurers of churches are finding theft of lead an increasing problem and premiums will, no doubt, be rising further.
The Church, our oldest building, belongs to us all and it will need our help to cover these costs. If you have any inventive ideas to raise funds please contact The Chronicle comptonchronicle@yahoo.co.uk or the churchwardens, contact details in The Directory on the back page.

Rural Cinema

This month's film will be either Bohemian Rhapsody or First Man on Saturday 23rd March at 4pm, doors open at 3:45pm, and there will be a second showing at 7:30pm, doors open at 7pm. Therefore, when booking please specify the time and number of seats required.
Please email cinema@fcvh.org.uk or text 07850 630 401 if you would like to reserve seats. The normal ticket price is still just £3. By joining our email list you have an opportunity to suggest and vote for your preferred films. See fcvhevents.blogspot.co.uk for full details.

Fenny In Flower

Fenny In Flower & Open Gardens takes place on 21st to 23rd June and now has a community Facebook page, ‘Fenny in Flower'. The Fenny Compton Nextdoor site will also have regular updates posted so please do search us out to keep up to date with the plans. We will still of course be bringing you the same information through the pages of The Compton Chronicle. The Fenny in Flower website is also up and running. Find us at fennyinflower.weebly.com
Front Garden Trail: Response to our appeal for front gardens to be included in the Front Garden Trail was good and, to date, we have approximately eight front gardens to enjoy during the Open Gardens weekend. We would welcome some more, so if you have a front garden of whatever size, whether just a collection of pots, or a small cottage garden area, please do contact Cherie Southgate on 770 101 for more details and to offer your front garden. You do not even have to be at home during the Open Gardens weekend to be part of the Front Garden Trail - just dress up your frontage with your pots, hanging baskets, window boxes etc.
Photos: If you have any pictures of past Open Gardens, we would love to put them on the website as tasters of what is to come. Fenny resident Sam Hunt has provided the beautiful pictures we have on the website so far. Jyan Dutton has volunteered to be our resident photographer and will be taking lots of pictures during the Open Gardens and Village Show which will be uploaded to the Fenny in Flower website. Please do send us your own pictures for inclusion.
Plant Stall: If you are a gardener and would like to donate some plants for the plant stall, please sow a few seeds for us this month so we have a good variety to sell at the Open Gardens weekend.
Make a Mile of Bunting: Thank you to those who are helping with the bunting but we need more people to reach our target of a mile. We are looking for help to mark-up fabric - template and fabric supplied - and cut out the pennants. If you like to sew and can offer a few hours please contact Caroline Fielder on 770 429 or Carole Fletcher on 770 634 who will advise you about sizes etc. We need to make 5,500 pennants to decorate the village! And, on the off-chance that you already have some bunting squirrelled away that you would be happy to loan, please contact Caroline on the number above.

Fenny Compton Church

Singing Sunday: 5pm on the first Sunday of each month at the Methodist Church until further notice. Learn new songs and hymns, you choose the songs & hymns. Join the choir - adult and children - at 4pm for choir practice.

Take a Spiritual Journey: Do you have faith in God? Are you spiritual? We invite you to come take a sacred journey of spiritual exploration. The spiritual life is all about paying attention. The Spirit of God is always speaking to us, but we need to slow down, stop, and give more than lip service to what God is saying. We need to get off autopilot and take time to look and listen with the eyes and ears of the heart. We need to stop and give ourselves time to do this.
Jesus said ‘Are you tired? Worn out? Burned out on religion? Come to me. Get away with me and you will recover your life. I will show you how to take a real rest. Walk with me and work with me—watch how I do it. Learn the unforced rhythms of grace. I will not lay anything heavy or ill-fitting on you. Keep company with me and you will learn to live freely and lightly' Matthew 11: 28-30
To be held on Tuesdays at 7:30pm in the Chapel of Ease, Northend for 5 weeks from 12th March to 9th April. We will explore ways to encounter God through various spiritual disciplines. For more information contact Rev'd Nicki.

Avon Dassett Gardening Club

Our first indoor meeting for this year will be on Tuesday 19th March at 7:30pm in Farnborough Village Hall when we will be able to hear how to make our gardens hedgehog friendly. These little creatures are truly the gardeners' friend as they live mainly on slugs and snails, but their numbers have declined massively in recent years, so any tips on how to encourage them into our gardens and then to keep them there, will be very welcome, not only for we gardeners, but for the hedgehogs themselves.
Do join us if this is of interest to you, you will be most welcome. Also, if you would like a copy of our 2019 programme, please contact our Chairman.
Club membership is £10 per year which is for five indoor meetings with refreshments, and three outdoor visits. You are also welcome to join us for any meeting for £2.

Over 60s

At our February meeting we held a Bring and Buy Sale for The Air Ambulance which helped us to make a donation for the year of £250.82.
Our next meeting will be held on Tuesday 12th March in Fenny Compton Village Hall at 2:30pm when there will be a Sing Along with the Ukaladies.
Please come along and join us for afternoon tea with sandwiches and homemade cakes, you will be made most welcome.

Fenny Compton & District WI

At our February meeting we celebrated the Chinese New Year with Chinese themed nibbles and one of Deborah's fiendish Quizzes. The evening was not just frivolous fun though, as we began the process of deciding on a resolution that will be taken to our National AGM in June. We also voted for candidates to be elected on to the NFWI Board for the period June 2019-June 2021.
Our March meeting will be a "hands on" event with Jane Whimbury showing us how to make Mosaic Coasters, so we should all have something to take home with us.
In April, as well as our usual monthly meeting, we will be joining Bishops Itchington WI at an event hosted by Kineton WI which brings to a close their year as hosts of our group of WIs. It will be our turn from September.
Our Craft Group continues meeting weekly in various members houses.
Visitors are welcome to any of our meetings for the small charge of £5 which includes refreshments and a raffle ticket.

Fenny Compton Scout Group

Thank you to all of you who came to the Family Quiz Night on 2nd February. We were pleased so many of you could come and support the Jamboree participants. There was a great atmosphere and you all contributed to a very fun-filled evening. Thank you to The Butchers Arms and The Merrie Lion for our raffle donations and for the generosity surrounding our unobtrusive remote-control car! Lily, Izzy and Sam raised over £170 each towards their jamboree contributions, which was beyond their expectations.
They still have some way to go before they reach their funding target and hope to organise another event in the spring. In the meantime, they are planning a Big Breakfast event on Saturday 11th May.

The Compton Chronicle

Georgina Runnicles has moved on to pastures new. We wish her well and thank her for all the work she has done for The Chronicle over many years. We welcome to the team Jason Wise and Michele Gill who will be working on the Diary and Club News.
It would be helpful if articles and news of clubs and societies could be sent in by the 12th of the month. As I am sure you appreciate, it takes some time to pull the magazine together and any delay in sending in copy makes this more difficult. The printer also needs sufficient time to produce the magazine.
February sees both Valentine's Day and the Chinese New Year which will be celebrated in grand style in Birmingham. This year is the Year of the Pig and on the Children's Pages there is an explanation the characteristics and good traits of those born in the Year of the Pig.

The Village Hall

Village Hall Sign: The Village Hall needs to be more visible and the trustees are running a competition for the most innovative and striking design for a new sign at the front of the building. Please consider the practicalities and likely cost of your idea along with the other requirements. Note that this is not an art competition, ideas are wanted that can be implemented to improve the image of the Hall. There will be a small prize and a big "Thank you" for the idea chosen so please get thinking and send in your ideas by Thursday 28th February. You can submit by email to sec@fcvh.org.uk or through the letterbox at the front of the Hall.

Easy Fundraising: Another way to support the Hall is Easyfundraising. This gives the Hall a small payment whenever you shop online at certain retailers. There is no cost to you and there is even a browser add-on to remind you when the option is available. Just go to www.easyfundraising.org.uk and search for Fenny Compton Village Hall. Thank you.
